Course Description

The course will provide an introduction to genomics, bioinformatics tools, and data analysis. The course is tailored to undergraduate students in biology but the content is also appropriate for graduate students.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn principles of genomics and bioinformatics.
  • Learn to use genomics resources and computational tools.
  • Learn to critically read literature related to genomics and bioinformatics.
  • Learn to work from the command line.
  • Learn to write Python programs.
  • Learn to analyze genomics datasets.

Biology 134, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30-1:45 pm,

Prerequisites

BZ 110 or BZ 120 or LIFE 102

Learning Assessment

Letter grades are as follows:

  • A (90-100%)
  • B (80-89%)
  • C (70-79%)
  • D (60-69%)
  • F (<60%)

Assignments

  • Exam 1 15%
  • Exam 2 15%
  • Exam 3 15%
  • Writing assignments 10%
  • Lab exercises 30%
  • Lab notebook 15%

Exams: Students will be given a full class period to complete exams. Exams will consist of multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer questions. Exams will cover both the lecture and laboratory material.

Writing assignments: Students will write a 3-4 sentence summary of assigned readings. Writing assignments are due the day they are assigned in class.

Lab exercises: Students will complete computer lab exercises (15 in total) and turn them in during class.

Lab notebook: Students will keep a lab notebook and turn it in on the last day of class.
