CONNECTING TO REMOTE COMPUTERS

We have already connected to a remote computer in this class!

  • rsync, wget, ftp, sftp, curl, scp

What other types of computers can we log into?

1. remote personal computers
2. servers (computing or file storage)
3. supercomputers

Features of Remote Servers & Supercomputers

  • Hard drive/solid-state drive: non-volatile data storage and retrieval (space measured in GB or TB).
  • Processor (CPU): perform computational tasks (speed measured in GHz).
  • Core: an independent processor.
  • Memory/RAM: temporary volatile storage of data (space measured in GB).
  • CPU cache: faster memory for temporary storage of copies of frequently used data (usually measured in MB).

Accessing remote computers with ssh

ssh….secure shell.

$ ssh username@server_address
$ ssh -l username server_address   # where '-l' is login name
