Fundamentals of Software Installation

The key to installing software is knowing what programs need to run.

There are generally:

  • Compiled (binary) programs such as c and c++, are run directly by the OS. Have to be compiled for each OS.
  • Java: Compiled, cross-platform. Run by java vm.
  • Scripted (text): parsed and run by the script's interpreter e.g.: python, bash, ruby, perl

All programs have dependencies, but only standard/common ones are installed by default.
